At this stage, time isof paramount importance and noneshould be lost, especially since thesesparklers may appear in a swarm. The recommended procedures forcombating incendiaries have beenpassing through more or less of a stateof evolution since the first bombs fellfrom the sky over England. Magnesium has a strong affinity foroxygen, which, in conjunction with itshigh combustion temperature, makesit very difficult to deal with when onceignited. Water will not extinguishburning magnesium, but it does pro-vide a practical means of controllingthe fire. When water is applied, theintense heat of the burning magnesiumbreaks down the water into its com-ponents of oxygen and hydrogen. Thesupply of these elements thus releasedgreatly accelerates the combustion ofthe bomb and reduces the time ofburning from 10 to 15 minutes down i9U2 Protecting the Service Against Fire 181

This is, ofcourse, an advantage where the sur-rounding fire can be restrained whilethe bomb is quickly being consumed. But the important thing is to have areliable supply of water and to knowhow to use it. When water is applied to the bombas a spray, the time of burning iseffectively reduced and there is aminimum of sputtering and violence. When applied as a solid stream, how-ever, an explosive reaction takes placeand white hot metal is scattered overa considerable area. During Eng- lands early experience of fighting thefire bomb, the use of a solid stream ofwater was considered to be the wrongprocedure and was discouraged. Stir-rup pumps or garden hose with dualspray and jet nozzle were accordinglyrecommended. The spray was usedon the bomb itself, while the jet wasavailable for dealing with any f
