BELL TELEPHONE QUARTERLY The telephone development of a greater number of cities isshown in the accompanying table, Telephone Developmentof Large Cities. Of particular interest are the figures relatingto the telephone development of the American cities groupedtogether in various population classes. Thus, the total of 53cities with more than 200,000 inhabitants, representing a com-bined population of 38,145,900, had an average developmentof 20.38. No single large foreign city has a telephone develop-ment exceeding this figure, with the exception of Stockholm andthe Canadian cities of Vancouver and Toronto. January 1st of each year When the number of telephones in each of the foreign capitalcities is compared with the total telephones in the correspond-ing country as a whole, the fact already stated above as regardsthe relatively high concentration of the telephone service in theurban centers of the foreign countries is brought out still moreemphatically. Thus London, with its 798,153 telephones, hadabout 37 per cent of all the telephones in Great Britain; Paris,with 434,066 telephones, had more than S3 per cent of all theinstruments in France; while the four cities of Berlin, Ham-burg-Altona, Leipzig and Munich had more than one-fourth ofthe total telephones in Germany. On the other hand, New 198 WORLD S TELEPHONE STATISTICS York had only 9 per cent, and Chicago less than 5 per cent, ofall the telephones in the United States.
