From the first news I had thatbleak Sunday afternoon until thesmall hours of the next morning, I was on the telephone almost continu-ously. Mr. Gifford and hundreds ofexecutives and administrative officialsof the System had similar experiences.The Government—especially Armyand Navy officials—discussed with usmany urgent features of our opera-tions. Local and long distance traffic onthe West Coast jumped tremendously.The toll traffic all over the country,particularly over the transcontinentalroutes and into and out of Washing-ton, soared to new and all-time highs.The army of telephone workers hadonly to know that they were needed.Telephone operators rushed to centraloffices to man the switchboards. Plantforces jumped into action. The BellSystem was in the war!

That message was flashed im-mediately .by our headquarters to allof the operating units of the Bell Sys-tem, in order that the fastest possibleservice might be given to this impor-tant agency of the Government. Ad-vance plans made it possible for Navycensors to move in on overseas circuitswithin a few hours. In the city of Washington and else-where, major feats were performed inmeeting the emergency. In the tolloperating room in Washington stoodsome 30 positions of toll switchboardon which the wiring had been onlypartially completed. Plant forces ofthe W^estern Electric Company and ofthe Chesapeake and Potomac Com-pany put these boards into oper
