rest zinc. Mean-while, however, production of plasticcombined set housings had begun andby August, 1941, one-third of com-bined set production had been con-verted to the plastic molding process.By February of this year conversionwas complete and combined set pro-duction, although running at a re-duced rate, was 100 per cent plastic.Since its introduction the conversionto the plastic process has realized asaving in zinc alone of about 2,000,000pounds. But Western Electrics alternativematerials program does not stop atthe combined sets housing. It has,in fact, effected changes in the com-position of scores of the more than 300separate parts that make up the mod-ern telephone set. combined-set specifications, rememberthat the telephone set itself representsbut 10 per cent or less of the totalphysical plant of the telephone sys-tem and that combined set manufac-ture, therefore, represents but a pro-portionate percentage of WesternElectric manufacture for the Bell Sys-tem. The total savings effected bythe introduction of alternatives in lit-erally thousands of places throughoutthe full roster of W. E. telephoneproducts run to really impressivetotals. Run down the roster of critical ma-terials normally involved in telephonemanufacture and youll find that allfigure in the Bell Systems alternativematerials program. Take copper, forinstance. Copper-steel is now beingused instead of bronze in drop wire,of which many millions of feet areused each year. The savings in cop-per effected by this change—in forcesince February—amount to 850,000pounds. Another 900,000 pounds of First Step Toward ReclamationReclaiming scrap metal successfully dependson careful segregation
