industries.At first only a few of the nearly 6,100Bell System exchanges were affected, and those not to any considerable ex-tent. Later, more and more placeswere involved—and to a much greaterextent. Originally, most of the ex-changes affected were relatively small,but by now a number of large citieshave entered the picture. Well before they were needed, planswere prepared to recruit large num-bers of operators quickly, and to havethem ready to operate the switch-boards by the time they were required.This recruiting work is continuing,and at an accelerated pace. In building up the forces, the co-operation of present employees is be-ing sought. It had been the experiencepreviously, and it still holds true, thatthis is one of the very best sources ofobtaining good applicants. Theyknow what it takes to be a good tele-phone operator.
