eech. At Rutgers we approach thesubject from a strictly practical view-point. We are turning out young men,many of whom will go into business.Good speech is one of the most help- ful assets these men can have, es-pecially since their careers are stillahead. Therefore, we are interestedonly in speech that can be used intel-ligently. Speech to be useful andvaluable must be practical! It occurred to us that for every oc-casion when a man speaks from theplatform or in the conference room,he takes part in hundreds of telephoneconversations. Again, this appliesparticularly to the younger men. Sofar as we knew, no school or collegeoffered instruction in use of the tele-phone—not even schools specializingin speech training. Yet your voice, bytelephone, is often your first introduc-tion to some stranger. His first im-pressions are likely to be determinedby how you sound to him in his re-ceiver.
