Summary
[edit]DescriptionBell Pit, Overlooking Rosedale Head - geograph.org.uk - 136024.jpg |
English: Bell Pit, Overlooking Rosedale Head. Bell Pits were formed by medieval mining for coal. A vertical shaft was sunk to reach the coal seam then working by candlelight the miners underdug the available coal at the base of the shaft. At some point the cavity excavated, now in the shape of a bell, would become too dangerous. The pit would then be abandoned and a new one dug twenty yards or so away. In time the pit collapsed forming the depressions seen today. |
