Title |
Bell |
||
Description |
English: An almost complete copper-alloy bell. This bell is conical in shape and measures 21mm in height with a rim diameter of c20mm. This bell has been cast and has an integral suspension loop, the top edge of which has been worn away. The sides are divided into six evenly spaced straight faces. Most of the rim is missing due to old damage apart from one section where there is a vertical cut at a corner and then either side of this corner the rim has been folded under, this creates a neater rim and a bulge on the outer face at the corner. It seems likely that the whole of the rim was originally folded over in this way. Inside the bell there are traces of corroded iron, presumably for the iron clapper. It is possible that this bell is a Norse bell, and late early medieval in date, due to its integral suspension loop and shaped rim. It certainly dates to between the late early medieval and end of the medieval periods. |
