Title
bell
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy sheet-metal bell fragment of Medieval date. Only the upper half of the bell survives and it has been bent out of its original hemispherical shape to an oval, and has been repaired. Attached to the top is the loop, made from a bent strip of copper-alloy 8.34mm in width. This has been attached via a rectangular plate and fixed with rivets. Where it survives, the lower edge of this bell fragment has been everted with the intention of fixing it to the lower hemisphere (missing). The bell measures 41.27mm in length, 25mm in width and 31.35mm in height. It weighs 13.71g. Similar bells have been found in excavations in London, in layers dating from the late 13th to early 15th centuries (Egan and Pritchard 1991: 338-9).
