| Description | Seen from Portchester Terrace, which runs parallel to Leinster Gardens W2. This is the cut and cover railway tunnel for which the original house was demolished, leaving just the 5 foot thick facade to face the street. That's the back of the Blakemore Hotel to the left. Andrew Martin's book on the Underground gives a good account of how it came about; Conan Doyle also used a fictionalised version of it in one of his Sherlock Holmes stories, where a murderer dumps a body onto a train here, which is only discovered when the train reaches Aldgate... |
