Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Beetle waylaid by wood ants, Vinney Ridge Inclosure, New Forest. There are many wood ant nests alongside the track on the east side of the Vinney Ridge Inclosure (see 233915) and this beetle had crossed the path of foraging wood ants. The ants were doing a good job of slowing the beetle down - in order to subdue their prey they have pincer-like mandibles and the ability to spray formic acid. The acorn and cup are there for scale, fallen from one of the oaks to the south of the track.
