Summary
[edit]DescriptionBeersheba-well-1917-AWM-1.JPG | A locomotive and well at Beersheba, blown up by the retreating Turkish forces after the town had been captured in a successful charge by the 4th and 12th Australian Light Horse Regiments on 31 October 1917. Three engineers are working to repair and clean the well at centre, from which an aqueduct channels water down the slope. Other working parties are visible on the left, including a mounted trooper. Only two of the seventeen wells at Beersheba had been completely destroyed by the Turks; and in the days which followed the occupation of the town the Australian engineers worked feverishly to restore the water supply for the parched troops and horses. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
