Description

English: Statue of two "bears" playing situated on the Ripperdastraat near the train station in Haarlem, the Netherlands. This statue was commissioned by the Haarlem council to decorate the station walkway as a commemorative gesture to the former Hofje van Codde en van Berensteijn that used to be situated there. That hofje moved during renovation of the station and currently resides on the Jos Cuyperstraat in Haarlem. The bears were a reference to the bears in the coat of arms of the family Berensteijn that founded the Berensteijn half of the hofje foundation still bearing that name. The Codde hofje was added in 1731. The bears of the family Berensteijn (also spelled Berensteyn) heraldic shield were originally wild swine bears, not brown bears.
