Beckfoot, Cumbria: Potsherds from Roman Cremation Burial
Description
English: Four pottery sherds which were probably part of a cremation burial and were found in the same area as cremated bone and four iron nails.

1. Body sherd of samian ware from a large vessel. The pink fabric is fine and hard and the slip is red. It is 42mm in length, 48mm wide, 11mm thick and weighs 25.04g.

2. Body sherd of coarse pottery, possibly from a cooking vessel, but otherwise could be a prehistoric sherd. The fabric is coarse and beige. It is 39mm in length, 18mm wide, 8mm thick and weighs 3.76g.

3. Body sherd of wheelmade black burnished ware pottery. The fabric is black and has small white quartz inclusions. It is 33mm in length, 11mm wide, 3.5mm thick and weighs 2.54g.

4. Body sherd of wheelmade black burnished ware pottery. The fabric has small white quartz inclusions. It is decorated with a lattice design. OR greyware with trellis ornament. It is 23mm in length, 18mm wide, 5mm thick and weighs 2.48g.
