Description

Jeanne de Laval.

Jeanne de Laval, épouse du duc René d'Anjou administre elle­ même le comté de Beaufort dont elle a l’usufruit.

Elle accorde de nombreux avantages aux habitants, notamment la jouissance exclusive des prairies communales (ordonnance du 1er mai 1471).

Les Beaufortais lui feront ériger un monument sur la place centrale de la ville. En 1842.

La position de la statue de Jeanne, au sommet d’une colonne de douze mètres, aurait été calculée pour que ses yeux croisent ceux de la statue de René située près du château d’Angers.

L'actuelle statue en pierre est une réplique de l’œuvre d’origine, en bronze, fondue sous l’occupation allemande en 1942.
