Description
English: The custom of walking with the Bear is found only in Moldova region of Romania on New Year's Eve. Masked men grunt and imitate the bear's swaying and jerking steps, striking the ground hard with their feet. The significance is purification and fertilization of the soil in the new year. Mask dances have pre-Christian origins, in fact as far back as the Paleolithic it seems.
