Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Beal Atha Gabhann: Silvermines, Co. Tipperary There has been mining in the Silvermines area since at least 1289 (the earliest record), although it is believed to go back to Roman times. Lead, including silver-bearing lead ore, zinc, copper, barite and sulphur have all been mined here, the last mine closing in 1993. There are considerable mining remains south and west of the village extending approximately 4kms along the base of the Silvermine Mountains. This sculpture of a miner, together with an old ore wagon, stands near the centre of the village beside the R499 and commemorates Silvermines' substantial mining history.
