Title |
Bead of uncertain date |
||
Description |
English: Translucent pale blue (aqua) glass bead of uncertain date. The bead appears to be sub-oval in plan with one rounded end. The other end is mostly missing to a break across the bead but appears to similarly flattened. The sides are irregular as it has been formed of a trail of glass and not rolled to smooth the edges of the trails. This has left spiralling indents in the sides. The glass flares out slightly around the holes at each end. It has a rough sided hole 2.3mm in diameter running though it. It is 10.8mm long and 8.5mm in diameter and weighs 0.9 grams.
Irregularity in the shape suggest it was wound but the slight flaring at each end mayhave been formed by removing the pontil or by stabbing the hole to reshape it after the pontil was removed.. Although pale blue beads are found in the Roman period, those examples are usually more globular, wider in diameter than they are long. Guido (1978:70) comments that stray examples of such beads cannot be dated with any certainty as similar examples were made up until modern times and were much used for lace bobbins. |
