•A SHOUr OF VIVE LeMPEKEUK ! KULLED ALONG THE EIELD (/. 58). celebrated sunken road of Ohain, runs in someplaces between banks, at others on the level ; itis paved down its centre, like most Belgian roads,with irregular stones, terrible to traverse for anydistance, and it undulates gently, as the ridgerises and falls, until it joins the Nivelle chaiisscebeyond Hougoumont. Hougoumont, surroundedby a quadrangle of tall trees, lies in a hollow infront of our ridge, perhaps halfway between itand the enemys line. A Flemish chateau with into the Nivelle road with an abattis of treetrunks there, held by a company of the 51stLight Infantry ; between the south wall andthe French, a beech wood, through which onecould see the corn-clad slopes beyond : and thatwas Hougoumont on the day of the battle. The beech wood has been cut down, theapple-trees are sparse and scanty now, thechateau was burned by the French shells, andthe garden is a grassy paddock ; but the rest c8 BATTLES OF THE NINETEENTH
