The seventh was SergeantMaxfield, who, dehrious with fever, resisted allattempts to move him. Kobert Jones, with rarecourage and devotion, went back a second timeto try to carry him out, but found the wardalready full of Zulus, and the poor sergeantstabbed to death on his bed. It has been mentioned that a wounded prisonerwas being treated in the hospital. So much hadhe been impressed by the kindness which he hadreceived, that he was anxious to assist in the de-fence. He said he was not afraid of the Zulus,but he wanted a gun. His new-born goodwillwas not, however, tested. When the ward inwhich he lay was forced. Private Hook, whowas assisting the Englishmen in the next room,heard the Zulus talking to him. The next dayhis charred remains were found in the ashes ofthe building.
