l country,to its indelible disgrace), such was the conditionof those brave hearts who wat about to makethe name of Waterloo-man a household word for all the ages. * * # » * The Brussels road runs across a shallow valley,three-quarters of a mile in width, all green andgolden with the ripenmg grain, dipping sharplyinto it by the white-walled, blue-roofed farm-stead of La Haye Sainte, and rising gently outagain at the cabaret of La Belle Alliance on itsway to the frontier beyond Charleroi. The valley is bounded by two ridges : on thenorthern one along the cross road which runsnearly the whole length of the position, ourarmy was posted in the form of a thin crescent ;on the southern ridge and the slopes leadingdown into the valley the French forces wereafterwards distributed, also, to some e.xtent, increscent shape. These crescents had their tips advancedtowards each other, and enclosed in the ovalthus formed were two important strongholds—La Haye Sainte, in advance of our left centre^
