The valley is bounded by two ridges : on thenorthern one along the cross road which runsnearly the whole length of the position, ourarmy was posted in the form of a thin crescent ;on the southern ridge and the slopes leadingdown into the valley the French forces wereafterwards distributed, also, to some e.xtent, increscent shape. These crescents had their tips advancedtowards each other, and enclosed in the ovalthus formed were two important strongholds—La Haye Sainte, in advance of our left centre^
