mer experience there, Ifelt that we could not be put in a better one; yetI wished we would proceed farther North, andget as near home as possible. I soon found thatmy wish would be gratified, for we soon after left,and sailed up the Chesapeake bay. We arrivedat Annapolis, Maryland, at ten oclock on thefollowing day, Monday, December 19th. As westeamed up to the dock we felt that we were in-deed in Gods country again. The wharves and shores were crowded withpeople, some of them being from the North, whowere looking for friends; and the sight of theloyal throng, who with beating hearts and trem-bling voices were inquiring for friends, and whohad a kind look and word for us all, made usfeel that we were indeed among friends. Themagnificent band belonging to the St. JohnsCollege hospital, which was stationed on thedock, first played Home, Sweet Home, andthen Hail Columbia. The scene that followedit would be impossible to describe. It was use-less for any of us to try to keep our eyes dry,

As we were taken to the Hospital, I heardfrequent expressions of indignation, one old gen-deman exclaiming, My God, can it be that inan age and country like this a man must look onsuch a scene! I wondered what the old gen-tleman would have said if he could have seen usbefore we were washed and put into clean cloth-ing. The hospital we were admitted to was calledthe St. Johns College hospital, and after beingagain washed, and our clothing taken from us,we were furnished with hospital clothing and putinto nice clean beds. The contrast from ourwretched condition in prison was so great that italmost seemed like a pleasant dream, and mymind could not sometimes fully realize that it wasall true.
