n. Cavalry were rushing away in dis-order, and infantry, frightened by the rapidity of their mounted companions, werein consternation. All were trying to escape faster than their ngighbors, dreadingmost of all to be the last. Presently the enemys cannon boomed in the rear, and a small cloud of smokein the sky, suddenly appearing, and then dissolving, showed where the shell hadexploded. Some shells fell among our meu, and the panic was quite general fora short time. Guns, knapsacks, cartridge-boxes, bayonets, and bayonet-cases, layscattered upon the ground in great confusion, thrown away by the panic-strickensoldiers Colonel Gordon and staff are safe; also General Williams and staff. While re-treating through Winchester, women from the houses opened fire of pistols uponour soldiers, and killed a great many of them. My reader will not fail to observe from the above, that General Bankss body,guard is composed of negroes, and that the women of Winchester killed a greatmanv of the Yankees.

On Friday^ the thirtieth of May, our camps presented noth-ing unusual, nor were any movements in progress that indi-cated the early commencement of hostilities. During the night,a thunderstorm of unusual violence shook the heavens, and rainfell so heavily that the whole face of the country was delugedwith water. The men in camp were exposed to all the violenceof the storm, and the roads were rendered impassable, with mudthree feet deep. The enemy were even worse off than ourselves,as the bottom lands at the head of the Chickahominy were flood-ed, and the stream itself much swollen. Active operations ontheir right were impossible.
