| Description | The Battery Park Hotel in Asheville, NC (1924). Edwin Wiley Grove purchased the old Battery Park Hotel in 1920. Within a year, the old building was destroyed, allegedlly from a fire from a workman's fire, although some think it was done intentionally. Grvoe built a new hotel complex just north of it and replaced the old hotel with his Arcade Building. The hotel was designed by William Lee Stoddart, one of the foremost hotel architects of the day, who previously worked with George B. Post. Reception to the building was mixed, partially because the former hotel was a beloved landmark of the city. In Look Homeward Angel, Thomas Wolfe criticized the building, saying "it was being stamped out of the same mold, as if by some gigantic biscuit-cutter of hotels that had produced a thousand others like it all over the country." |
