Battalgazi Ulu Cami

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A pictures of the exterior, with the dome well in sight. One of pictures taken during two visits, one before restorations, another with works in progress. Translated from a site in Turkish: "Located in Battalgazi district (Old Malatya), this mosque was built in 1224 during the reign of the Seljuk Ruler Alaaddin Keykubat. According to its inscription, its architects are Yakup bin Abu Bakr al-Malati and Mansur bin Yakup. The parts made of brick show the first mosque shape, while the stone ones show the later additions. It is the first and only example in Anatolia of the great Seljuk mosques in Iran with a plan with four iwans. The inner courtyard with its garden and pool in the middle, adjacent to the dome in front of the mihrab, forms the basis of the plan. Geometric stars and crosses made of turquoise and aubergine tile mosaics, the inscription remaining on the arch and the columns covered with ceramic mosaics in zigzag form are the striking decorations of the mosque. The inner surface of the dome has an enormous tile decoration with a brick coating. Dome skirts are decorated with knitted bricks in the form of geometric art of triangles. The mosque is in the district center and is open to visitors every day of the week."
