| Description |
One of many places in Victoria great for window shopping or people watching. Bastion Square was where the Hudson Bay Company first established Fort Victoria in 1843. In the Fraser River Gold Rush of 1858, people flocked here, and the fort was demolished and replaced by shops to cater to the newcomers. Eventually Victoria and mainland British Columbia were united in 1860 into one territory, and by 1871, the unified British Columbia joined Canada, with Victoria as the provincial capital. |
