Description

Arms of Bassingbourne of Woodhall (alias "Hatfield Woodhall"), Watton-at-Stone, Hertfordshire: Gyronny of twelve azure and or, as seen in stained glass in the east window of the Hare Chapel of Holy Trinity Church, Stow Bardolph, Norfolk. Sir w:Nicholas Hare (c.1484-1557), Master of the Rolls, Speaker of the House of Commons, and on the accession of Queen Mary to the Crown, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, married Catherine Bassingbourn, a daughter and co-heiress of John Bassingbourn of Woodhall in Hertfordshire. Woodhall Lodge, near Watton at Stone, Herts., was the seat of Sir Henry Boteler (fl.1566/83), who married firstly Catharine Waller, a daughter of Robert Waller, of Hadley, Middlesex; secondly Alice Pulter, da. of Edward Pulter of Great Wymondley, Herts. (Source: BOTELER (BUTLER), George (c.1583-1657), of Ellerton, Yorks. and Tewin, Herts., Published in The History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1604-1629, ed. Andrew Thrush and John P. Ferris, 2010[2]) His son by his first wife was John Boteler, 1st Baronet "of Hatfield Woodhall" (c.1566-1637)) created a baronet on 12 April 1620, later created Baron Boteler of Brantfield.
