Summary
[edit]DescriptionBase of shed antler of Fallow deer IMG 6936T.jpg |
English: This is the antler of a Fallow deer stag, Dama dama, shed after probably about the fourth year of bearing antlers. In the first year or two the antlers have not appeared. This compound photo shows aspects of the base of the shed antler, with the spongy cancellous bone in the central medulla, and the hard cortical bone round the outside. The corona or burr is the crenellated bony rim of cortical bone around the base. |

This location is in the High Karoo of Namaqualand in South Africa, on a guest farm game reserve south of Sutherland. The country has no indigenous deer, but domesticated fallow deer have escaped and become feral in semi-arid conditions. They seem to do well here among other medium-sized game such as various antelope.
