Title
Base of a Roman ceramic vessel of Vectis Ware.
Description
English: Fragment of a ceramic coarse-ware vessel of Roman date. Diameter 89mm. Weight 134.64g.

The fragment is a complete base of a Vectis Ware vessel that was probably manufactured in the Isle of Wight and closely resembles Black Burnished Wares produced in mainland England. From the edge of the base, the small portion of the body of the vessel slopes inwards for a short distance before flaring outwards. The underside of the base is slightly concave. The core, which is light grey, is sandwiched between very thin reddish brown layers and the exterior has the remains of a dark grey/black burnished surface. The fabric is largely tempered with crushed flint and rounded quartz. However, there is some crushed mollusc shell and possibly some grog. The fragment may be part of a flared jar although not enough of the vessel has survived to be able to determine a positive classification. The breaks are very abraded and this is, no doubt, a result of the vessel having being in contact with the mobile sand and shingle on which it was found within the inter-tidal zone near High Water Mark.
