Summary

[edit]
Description The statue commemorating the mathematical physicist James Clerk Maxwell (a native of Edinburgh), commissioned by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, at the east end of George Street. Maxwell had been a Fellow of the RSE, as well as a being a Fellow of the Royal Society. The plinth of the statue has two bas-reliefs, this one showing Isaac Newton's experiments on light. Newton and Einstein (on the other side), are depicted as Ancient Greek philosophers. The figure on the left represents Apollo "firing" a beam of light. Newton is shown (second figure from the left) passing light through a prism resting on an obelisk, which splits the beam into a rainbow on a board, held by a naked boy. The red part of the spectrum is then refracted through a second prism (held by a kneeling figure) on to the floor. A seated philosopher points at the red light on the floor. The figure on the right is the Greek goddess of Dawn, Eos, "rosy-fingered Dawn". She stands on the rising sun and her hair is garlanded with roses.
