Description

Estrela basilica (1779-1790), Lisbon.

When Maria Francisca Isabel Josefa Antónia Gertrudes Rita Joana de Bragança, Princess of Brazil and Duchess of Bragança married her uncle Pedro in 1766, she promised to the Christian deities that she would build a church if she bore a male heir. The deities apparently accepted the bargain because she did have a baby son the following year. However, work on the church that was to become the Estrela basilica, did not start until 1777. Given the terrible devastation caused by the earthquake of 1755, the immediate priorities of the government, led by Prime Minister Marquis of Pombal, were to rebuild the city rather than build yet another awesome church. Whether the deities were upset with the delay or found the church lacking in some way is not known: what is certain is that Maria's son and heir apparent died the following year. Construction continued until 1790 and the church was inaugurated in 1794. By that time, Queen Maria, a life-long religious maniac, had been declared mentally unfit and her powers transferred to her son, prince John, later King John VI. The church and its convent annex are in the late baroque style, a small-cale version of the Mafra convent. Various architects were involved in its design, particularly Mateus Vicente de Oliveira (1705-1786) and Reinaldo Manuel dos Santos (1731-1791).
