| Description | Built in 1906, this theatre was originally known as the Colonial Hall, a vaudeville and live performance venue, later becoming the Esquire Theater before being renovated with its present Modern facade in 1968, being renamed the Bartell Theatre around this time. The building’s facade is clad in small green mosaic and larger cream-colored tile on the base, with a large sign board abov the two entrances, which are flanked by poster display cases, a marquee with multiple panels, decorative geometric panels colored silver in pentagon-shaped bays on the upper portion of the facade, framed by stucco-clad trim bands with three gable parapets, and a prow-shaped vertical sign displaying the name “Bartell” in the center of the facade. Very little is left of the building’s early origins, but the present facade is an excellent example of the modern exterior treatment that was used to cover older buildings in the mid-20th Century to modernize them. |
