Summary
English: Bart (Hercules Albertus) Pretorius (22 Aug 1803 – 25 Sep 1889, Broederstroom), a Voortrekker and one of three younger brothers of the Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius. Photographer and date of photo unknown. Bart was sworn in as field cornet of the Cape Colony's Voor-Sneeuberg Ward on 4 April 1836, and once he arrived in Natal he trekked out against the Zulus as laager commandant with the Wen/Victory Commando. He was one of five horsemen who sallied out of the Blood River laager to provoke the Zulus into charging again, see: Die Groot Trek Gedenkdagboek, 1838–1988. De Jager-HAUM Publishers (Pta). During the 1840s Piet, Bart and Wynand settled near the Crocodile River at the current Broederstroom (named after them), see: Willie Meyer ( 2012), Magaliesberg Kaleidoscope. Bart built a house at Broederstroom c.1845 which is still standing, and his grave can also still be seen, see: eGGSA Andries Pretorius followed his brothers to this area in 1848 but died 5 years later. His son M.W. Pretorius once again established himself there. |
