English: Barrel pylon of the 150 kV Heimolen–Zele power line in Waasmunster, East Flanders (Belgium).

A barrel pylon has three traverses with nominally two circuits. The small traverse at the top carries lightning wires. The only difference to a vertical configured pylon is a longer middle traverse whose phase wires are at a larger distance from the tower. The advantage of this configuration is that the distance between two phase positions is always maximized and remains in circular symmetry. This minimizes the effects of inductance between the phase wires and ensures each wire behaves electrically identical. When changing the phase positions, each wire has an equal load. As a result, these high-voltage lines are the most efficient and have the smallest transport loss and the magnetic field is narrower at groundlevel. In Belgium barrel pylons are widely used in the 150 and 70 kV grid.

Een tonmast heeft drie traversen met nominaal twee circuits. Bovenaan is er nog een kleine traverse met twee bliksemdraden. Het enige verschil met een drievlaksmast is dat de middelste traverse langer is, zodat de middelste fasedraden op grotere afstand van de toren hangen. Dit heeft als voordeel dat de afstand tussen twee faseposities steeds maximaal is en cirkelsymmetrisch blijft. Deze symmetrie minimaliseert de inductie-effecten tussen de fasedraden onderling en zorgt ervoor dat iedere draad zich elektrisch identiek gedraagt. Bij het wisselen van de faseposities wordt iedere draad even zwaar belast. Daardoor zijn deze hoogspanningslijnen het meest efficiënt en hebben ze het kleinste transportverlies. Ook is het magneetveld aan de grond smaller. In België worden tonmasten veel gebruikt in het 150- en 70 kV-net.

Op de achtergrond zien we nog een kleinere drievlaksmast (in België dubbelvlagmast genoemd) van de 70 kV lijn Hamme–Sint-Niklaas.
