Title
Barrel padlock fragment
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy strap-junction of medieval date. The strap-junction is flat and circular, with a cross-shaped central aperture. Each of the four arms of the cross ends in a recessed constriction; one constriction appears to retain a fragment of iron loop and two others have a great deal of iron corrosion. The copper alloy has a smooth light green patina. The fragment is 18mm long, 16.6mm wide and 3.5mm thick. It weighs 3.54g. Compare YORYM-BD3881.

This item was originally identified as a fragment of a medieval barrel padlock, probably dating from the 12th or 13th century, of which only the end piece containing the cross-shaped keyhole survives. However, it is only half the size of examples found in York (Finds from Medieval York, pages 2865 - 2866) and there are also features such as the constrictions and iron loop which do not fit with this identification. Rob Webley (FLO) has pointed out that it is more likely to be a strap-junction and can be compared to YORYM-BD3881, which also retains a loop on one arm, although this time of copper alloy.
