Title
Barrel padlock, incomplete
Description
English: An incomplete and worn cast copper-alloy barrel padlock c.13th to 14th centuries in date, c.1250-1400.

Description: The padlock has a cylindrical slightly facetted (on top and bottom) case/body. It has a fixed bolt attached to a rectangular arm. The arm is perpendicular to the case/body. At the arm end the case is closed but has a slot to receive a key. The flat bottom of the case has decoration formed by three parallel wavy lines which run from end to end. The fixed bolt has snapped roughly halfway along its' length and the end of the case has a worn break likely accounting for a third of its total length. It has a worn light green patination with some darker patina on the bar.

Measurements: 26.82mm long, 21.24mm high (with bolt and arm, case 9.8mm) 9.21mm wide and 6.57g in weight.

Discussion: Egan (1998, 93) illusrates simlar examples which are dated c.13th and 14th centuries. Similar have been recorded on this database e.g. DOR-8FC786 which also shares this examples wavy line decorative motif.
