Summary
English: The total length of the dam is 7,919 meters. The crest elevation is 225 meters. Itaipu is in fact four dams together - from the far left, a filling earth dam, a rockfall dam, a main concrete dam, and a concrete dam to the right wing.
The maximum outflow of the Itaipu spillway (62.2 thousand cubic meters per second) corresponds to 40 times the average flow rate of the Iguaçu Falls. The flow of two Itaipu turbines (700 cubic meters of water per second each) corresponds to the average flow rate of the Cataratas (1500 cubic meters per second). Brazil would have to burn 536 thousand barrels of oil per day to generate power from Itaipu in thermoelectric plants. The main dam is 196 meters high, which is equivalent to a 65-storey building. Note: Until now the Argentines are afraid of opening the floodgates of Itaipu. |
