Notes: the clock is being installed in the GPO tower, Whitehead's Parcel Delivery depot on left. "THE POST- OFFICE CLOCK. A considerable amount of misapprehension seems to exist with regard to the manufacture and erection of the clock designed for the tower of the General Post Office, more especially in reference to the bells which are in future to strike the hours and quarter-hours and to furnish the required chimes. After a number of designs and specifications had been submitted and rejected, in July of last year the Government received seven tenders for the work, including six from Australian firms and one from England. Out of these the board appointed for the purpose of dealing with the matter accepted the tender of Mr. A. Tornaghi, of George-street, Sydney, for the sum of £5480, it being understood that the clock was to be constructed, according to the latest designs and to include all the most recent improvements, under the supervision of the board, which included amongst its members the Colonial Architect and the Government Astronomer."
