Baron Hieronymus von Münchhausen came from Hanover and lived from 1720-1792. He was an officer in Russia for many years and fought in two wars against the Turks. He was well-known as a man of wit and humor, and was renowned as a storyteller of his own incredible war, hunting and travel adventures. With a bottle of good wine, he was happy to tell his friends about his wonderful journeys and adventures, which are still read with pleasure everywhere today. Uniform title: Dimensions: 138 x 90 mm. Date: ca. mid-1920s or earlier Nationality: German Publisher: Uvachrom Gesellschaft für Farbenphotographie m.b.H., München [Munich]-Stuttgart, [Germany] Series: Serie 324 Nr. 4912 Medium: Uvachrom color print from original watercolor painting Physical description: deckle edges Interpretive notes: Baron Munchausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia is a 1785 fictional work by Rudolf Erich Raspe (1736-1794), very loosely based on the life of a real German nobleman, Hieronymus Karl Friedrich, Freiherr von Münchhausen, who was evidently quite the raconteur. Raspe ascribed a series of exaggerated "tall tale" adventures to his principal character. In this first card in an unusually large series of 12, illustrator Herrfurth sets the stage by showing the Baron -- fortified by a large container of wine -- amusing a circle of friends with tales of his fantastic exploits. Smoking their post-supper pipes, the listeners eagerly lean in towards the Baron. The small private room, its walls decorated with hunting trophies, lends an air of intimacy to this relaxed late night scene. Subject headings: Dogs
