Il tubo contiene mercurio. Alla base inferiore, il tubo è collegato ad un recipiente (pozzetto), cilindrico, di base più grande del tubo. Il collegamento è realizzato in ottone. Al pozzetto sono collegate tre grandi viti in ottone che servono per fissarlo. Mediante sostegni di metallo, tubo e pozzetto sono agganciati ad un supporto di legno a forma di tavola, con bordi modanati. A circa due quarti della lunghezza dello strumento è il termometro accessorio, in ottone e vetro, avvitato al tubo barometrico. Reca una graduazione al grado da -10°C a 45°C con divisioni principali indicate ogni 10°. Sul supporto del termometro è l'incisione con la firma e la data. A circa tre quarti della lunghezza è la vite di azione del nonio di lettura. All'estremità superiore della tavola è un occhiello che garantisce la sospensione alla parete. Nella parte superiore, la tavola reca una traccia rettangolare in corrispondenza alla zona dove forse in origine era incollato un cartiglio, perduto. funzione: misura scientifica della pressione atmosferica modalità d'uso: posto lo strumento in verticale, tarato lo strumento rispetto alla temperatura ambiente, leggere sulla scala il valore raggiunto dal mercurio nel tubo |

L'Istituto Tecnico Statale "Buonarroti" nacque nel 1963 come Istituto Tecnico per Geometri "Buonarroti" per gemmazione dall'Istituto Tecnico Commerciale e per Geometri "Terra di Lavoro" (sorto nel 1914). I beni originari del "Buonarroti" furono ceduti dal "Terra di Lavoro". Non è provata da documenti la provenienza originaria del barometro dal Regio Istituto Tecnico "Garibaldi". I beni del "Garibaldi" alla soppressione furono ceduti al "Terra di Lavoro" nel 1938. L'ipotesi della provenienza del "Garibaldi" resta decisamente più probabile rispetto alla provenienza dell'Istituto Tecnico Commerciale e per Geometri "Terra di Lavoro" (sorto nel 1914).
