Description
English: Barlow's wheel, an experimental electric motor designed by English mathematician Peter Barlow in 1822. It is a form of homopolar motor. Electric current flows from the axle of the rotor through the points which dip into a trough of mercury, and back to the battery. The points are between the poles of the magnet which creates a transverse magnetic field. The Lorentz force due to the moving charges in the magnetic field causes the wheel to rotate.
