English: Portrait of the Bark Monrovia of New York. Signed and dated "WG Yorke/1878" l.r. Oil on canvas, the vessel shown under full sail traveling from right to left in New York Harbor, Castle William off its starboard bow, a steam/sail vessel off its starboard stern, the vessel identified on a pennant and quarterboards. Note: A gilt plaque affixed to the frame indicates that the Monrovia, under Captain Henry Rogers, made fifty-four round trip voyages to Sierra Leone and Liberia, liberating slaves. |
