| Description | This is the Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center, the heart of Western Carolina University’s Arts and Music programs, located at Centennial Drive and University Way in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Designed by the Massachusetts-based form GUND Partnership, the contemporary structure was constructed between 2003 and 2005 to house art studios, galleries, classrooms, performance halls, and a performing arts center for the university, drawing heavy inspiration from the forests that surround the campus in its design, with tree-like columns and Branch-like supports being found in the auditorium and at the various entrance pavilions around the building. One of the best contemporary buildings I know of in the region, the structure is one I am very familiar with, as yours truly has appeared in many performances and events at the building, as it was used by the local school system and local organizations for years as it was the best available performance space in the area, as well as having attended many events at the building throughout my childhood, as my parents were interested in introducing my brother and I to the arts and culture as much as possible. The building did not inspire my love for architecture, which arose before the building appeared on the site of old intramural fields on the university campus, but it is one of the few contemporary buildings that I find to be a great example of modern design, and actually compliments and harmonizes with its surroundings and context, rather than ignoring or countering them. |
