Summary
[edit]DescriptionEdward Barcalo House, Buffalo, New York - 20200518.jpg |
English: The Edward Barcalo House, 371 Depew Avenue at Beard Avenue, Buffalo, New York, May 2020. Built in 1907, the design seen architects Green & Wicks working within the Colonial Revival style overall (cf. the symmetry of the façade with a Palladian window in the center) but also incorporating Neoclassical and Arts and Crafts influences (respectively: the Doric portico and fluted pilasters at the entrance, and the widely overhanging eaves of the roof with unenclosed rafters). Edward J. Barcalo (1870-1963) came to Buffalo as a young man of twenty as an employee of the Buffalo Brass and Iron Bedstead Company, but in 1896 co-founded the Barcalo and Boll Manufacturing Company, which grew into one of the nation's leading manufacturers of beds and upholstered furniture (including the Barcalounger, the famous reclining chair that the company began manufacturing in 1940). Two years after Barcalo's death, the company vacated its local offices and moved to Martinsville, Virginia; Barcaloungers are now manufactured in China. The house remains in private hands. |
