Title
barbed and tanged arrowhead (ventral)
Description
English: Flint barbed and tanged arrowhead, triangular in plan, trapezoidal in profile and lozenge-shaped in section, with short barbs and tang. The tang may have broken off the shaft and then was reworked in the past so that the arrow could be used again. The dorsal face has been invasively retouched throughout, from all margins to meet at the slight medial ridge, and the ventral face has been retouched on all margins but not beyond. The flint is a mottled light to dark grey in colour, suggesting that it was probably derived from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is exactly 1:1, which is common for this type of Beaker period arrowhead.

Bond (2004) illustrates similar barbed and tanged arrowheads on page 125, Fig.5.110, Sutton Type B (h), and on page 147, Fig.5.133, Nos.F177-8, which are dated to the Beaker period.

Keene (1999) illustrates a similar arrowheads from the barrows at Pelynt, Cornwall and Warkleigh, Devon on pages 31 & 64, Figs.1 & 3, Nos.5 & 37, which date from the Early Bronze Age.
