bar mount |

Description |
English: Incomplete silvered cast copper-alloy hinged bar mount, probably from a casket or container, dating from the Medieval period, c.1200-1400. The mount is rectangular in plan and triangular in section with a broken hinge at one end and a pointed knop at the other beyond a rounded terminal with a rivet hole, 2.4 mm in diameter, in the centre. There is another rivet hole, 2.5 mm in diameter, within a square collar half way along the mount, and both of the rivets are missing. Between this collar and the rounded terminal there is a rectangular segment with two bevelled faces divided by a longitudinal groove decorated with raised oblique lines in a herringbone pattern on either side of the groove. Between the square collar in the centre and the transverse collar before the hinged terminal, there is also a rectangular segment with herringbone pattern in one section where the original surface survives best. The upper surface of the mount has patches of silver remaining suggesting that this face was once entirely silvered. The broken terminal curves inwards towards the back of the mount suggesting it was a hinge rather than a hook from a belt mount as that would curve outwards and upwards towards the face of the mount.
See a similar casket mount recorded in NCL-6608C7. Read (2001) illustrates similar casket mounts on p.23, fig.12, nos.165-166, which are dated from c.1230-1260. Bailey (2008) illustrates a similar belt decoration or stiffener with a herringbone pattern on page 48, fig.C11.62, which is dated from the 13th to the 15th century. Bailey (2011) illustrates a similar belt chape with three square segments with cross hatching and two rectangular segments with herringbone and a pointed knopped terminal with a rivet hole at one end, on page 95, fig.64, which is dated from the Medieval period. |
