Summary

[edit]
Description

Ulsan, just south of Gyeongju, today may be a major metropolis, home to the world's largest automobile assembly plant (Hyundai Motor Company), the world's largest drydock (Hyundai Heavy Industries), and the world's largest oil refinery (SK Energy), but as recently as the mid-20th Century, it was just a very small, sleepy fishing town.

But it did have a very long history of human habitation, as evidenced by this petroglyph (this is a replica at the National Museum Gyeongju Branch). No dates are stated in the captions, but the petroglyph is from the Bronze Age.

On the left, three turtles swim in formation, denoting fertility and mystery.

In the middle right, a shaman performs a ceremony for abundant hunting and whaling; there is a whale below him. The shaman has a tail and a very large penis.
