Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Wat Arun Ratchawararam, or WatArun in short, is located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, north of the former royal palace, next to Arun Ammarin Road, Bangkok Yai district. Built in a period of Ayutthaya Kingdom, this temple was originally named Wat Makok Nok and changed to Wat Chaeng in Thonburi Kingdom. It is the official royal temple of King Rama II’s reign as the king much attached significance to the temple since he was still the Prince Itsara sunthon and spent time at this temple for 24 years, from 1785 to 1809. Later, his son, King Rama III managed to complete the construction of a 5-peak prang resembling the concept of Mount Meru. This structure was decorated with ceramics in several colours imported from China. There are also two demon gate guardians, collectively called “Yak WatChaeng”, named “Thotsakan” and “Sahat Decha” from a famous epic poem ‘Ramayana’

Situated in the King Taksin shrine is King Rama II’s bed made of golden teakwood crafted in Chinese pattern. The ubosot houses the principal Buddha statue named “Phra Buddha Toranisorarat LokanatDilok”.

It has been an annual tradition for all king of Chakri Dynasty to make a merit offering monk ropes at this temple through spectacular royal barge procession.
