A maërl bed is an accumulation of red calcareous algae living on soft coastal shallows, a few centimetres to several metres thick. It constitutes a real reservoir of biodiversity because its structure provides a wide range of microhabitats as well as a nursery and recruitment area for many commercially exploited species (scallops, flat oysters, young sea bass, sea bream, cuttlefish, etc.). In Brittany, more than 900 species of invertebrates and 150 species of algae have been recorded living on maërl. Brest harbour is home to one of the most extensive beds in Europe: it covers several dozen kilometres. (Extract published in the Nature pages of Le Télégramme on 04/27/2016) |
