Title |
Banbury: Spindle whorl |
||
Description |
English: A sub-circular lead spindle whorl with a convexed top. The underside had a raised outer lip while the remainder is roughly flat. The hole diameter is 9.02mm, while the overall diameter is 26.72mm. The thickness is 8.76mm and the weight is 28.2gms.
This whorl may be a drop spindle whorl (located at the base of a spinning stick), used to spin heavier or thicker yarn. As an artefact these very hard to date - this type of spindle has been in use since prehistoric times, but as it is made from lead, it may date anywhere from the Roman to post-medieval periods, when the spinning wheel became widespread. This particular whorl was found in association with a tegula (Roman roof tile) so it may date to this period. |
